The main house is approximately 3100 square feet and consists of three gabled structures connected by transparent flat roof elements. The center gable, which is one large room, houses the kitchen, living, and dining areas. This voluminous space has shiplap walls, concrete floors, and a vaulted ceiling with exposed spiral ducts. The wood beams which span between the banks of floor to ceiling glass, extend beyond the exterior walls, providing the structure for the cantilevered roof on the front and rear porches (thereby eliminating columns).
The glass connector to the East, houses the pantry and mudroom. This space leads to the laundry room, powder room, and one car garage, which are housed in a small gable structure. Similarly, to the West, the office is housed in the glass connector, which leads to the bedroom wing. The master suite and two children’s suites are included in this form.
The exterior materials include hardieplank siding with mitered corners, stone veneer on the foundation wall, and a standing seam galvalume roof.
The detached barn structure provides additional storage for vehicles, entertaining space, and sleeping areas for guests. The entertaining space has concrete floors, stained wood paneling and a vaulted ceiling with exposed collar ties. Facing the lake is an 18’ wide overhead garage door with retractable screens. A smaller garage door sits atop the counterspace which serves as a kitchenette from within, and bar area on the outside. Upstairs, is a loft with exposed framing and pine floors. This area includes a sitting area, extra sleeping space and a bathroom.
In contrast to the house, the exterior of the barn is board and batten hardie siding, with a shingle roof and stone foundation. The lake side of the barn is wrapped with an ipea deck that includes a firepit and seating area which extends to meet the boat dock.

Description
The scope of this project included the design of a family lake home and separate barn structure. The architect was challenged with creating a building that fit with the rural context, but also incorporated a fresh aesthetic and large expanses of glass to capture the dramatic lake views. To achieve this goal, the architect used a combination of simple gable forms and flat roofed glass ‘connectors’. The detached barn structure, which contrasts with house, provides a lakeside entertaining space, additional storage, and accommodations for guests.
