Craig Borum, FAIA - Jury Chair

Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI
Craig Borum, FAIA is the founding principal of PLY (1999) and has overseen the growth and transformation of the practice into PLY+ architecture, urbanism, design. At PLY, his work has been recognized with a Progressive Architecture Award, and an Award from Architect Magazine. He has been the principal designer on nine projects which have won Michigan AIA Design Awards across the building and interior design categories. Additionally, his designs have also won an American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum, and a Wood Design Award from Wood Design and Building Magazine. He is a recipient of the highly competitive Young Architects Prize from the Architectural League of New York, and in 2007 he was included in Wallpaper Magazine’s list of “101 of the world’s most interesting new architects.” His design for the Mies van der Rohe Plaza in Detroit won first prize in Urban Design in the 15th Quito Biennale of Architecture, as well as prizes in numerous national and international competitions. His work has also been featured in major publications in the US and internationally.
Mr. Borum is from Portsmouth, Virginia and received his architectural training from the University of Virginia. He is a Professor at the University of Michigan where he served as Director of the Master of Architecture Program from 2010- 2012.
Terry Boling, AIA
Principal and Founder, Terry Boling Architect
Associate Professor - Practice, University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, OH
Terry Boling is a practitioner, builder, and educator. His award-winning practice of design and fabrication work has been published in I.D. Magazine, Architecture Magazine, Dwell magazine, and Architectural Record, and has been honored with numerous local and state-wide AIA design awards. As in his own practice, his pedagogic focus is centered on questions of material research, technique, and fabrication. His work with students is featured in a chapter of the book “DesignBuild Education” edited by Chad Kraus. The Alchemy project, installed in Venice, Italy, concurrent with the 2018 Biennale, won an AIA Cincinnati Honor Award in 2017, an AIA Ohio Award in 2018, and a Global Architecture and Design Award in 2018. Professor Boling has been honored nationally by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture with a Design Build Award in 2017, a Collaborative Practice Award in 2016, a Design Build Award in 2014, and a Faculty Design Award in 2010, and in 2019, Professor Boling was named the “Bruce Goff Chair for Creative Architecture” at the University of Oklahoma.
Rachel Kowalczyk, AIA

Associate Project Architect, Albert Kahn Associates in Detroit, MI
Rachel Kowalczyk is a registered architect, designer, and educator based in Detroit, MI. Rachel has worked with Albert Kahn Associates for seven years as a Project Architect specializing in Adaptive Reuse and Mixed-Use Development. Rachel is passionate about reuse in architecture as a means to create a cultural, sustainable, and human-centric built environment.
Rachel received her M.Arch and BS.Arch from Lawrence Technological University. She has continued her relationship with LTU CoAD as an Adjunct Professor. Her work as a professor at LTU is practice-driven and emphasizes curiosity in design.
Additional accomplishments include an award-winning proposal for the NASA 3D Printed Habitat challenge. And ongoing participation in a local Food Bank fundraiser that uses her design skills to provide a meaningful contribution to the local community.
