2018 AIA COLUMBIA AWARDS JURY
Design Awards submissions are judged by a distinguished jury of AIA architects and will be conferred at the AIA Columbia Design Awards Gala in October 2018.

JURY CHAIR

Margaret L. Butler, AIA - Jury Chair

Associate Principal, McCarty Holsaple MCarty | Knoxville, TN

Ms. Butler is an Associate Principal at McCarty Holsaple MCarty. Moving to McCarty in 2015, she has practiced architecture in both Nashville and Knoxville for over 30 years, working with both large and small firms as well as owning her own architectural practice. Her experience includes site development / redevelopment / master planning; new urbanist neighborhood planning; healthcare; single family and multifamily affordable housing; and K-12 as well as higher education planning and design projects.

In addition to architecture and planning, she has provided full interior design services on most of her completed projects. Her healthcare focus has been in clinic design and she presented at the 2012 National Association of Community H eallth Centers Conference and Knoxville Medical Group Management Association on Healthcare Clinic Design. An award-winning designer, she founded the design awards program for the AIA East Tennessee and has remained very involved in her alma mater - The UT College of Architecture and Design.

She has served as a visiting lecturer teaching second year studio in architecture and interior design, served as a Bronze Medal juror and currently serves on the Dean’s Board of Advisors. She is regularly invited as a visiting studio juror. In 2014 she was invited to participate on the National Architectural Accrediting Board Accreditation Team for the college. She has been very active in the Knoxville community throughout her career serving in leadership roles on many volunteer community boards and panels.

Marleen K. Davis, FAIA - Principal, Thomas K. Davis | Marleen Davis Architects.  Ms. Davis is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design, and holds a Master of Architecture with Distinction from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Archtiecture from Cornell University. She has lectured extensively on Design Thinking and Design Education, and has exhibited her work throughout the U.S. and Europe. She received the Presidents Award from AIA Tennessee in 2003, and a grant from AIA National for Disaster Preparation in Tennessee in 2006.

John Sanders, FAIA - Partner, Sanders Pace Architecture – John is a founding member of Sanders Pace Architecture, created in 2002 primarily with a focus on design opportunities within Knoxville’s Downtown Central Business District and its immediate surrounding areas. His passion for Architecture can be seen on the challenging projects that he and his firm have been involved with in those areas. Along with his professional investment comes his personal redevelopment endeavors of several properties within the district that have been successfully completed, returning blighted or unusable properties back to vibrant reuses. He recently was appointed by the City of Knoxville to reside on the Downtown Knoxville design review board for a two-year term. John has been an Adjunct Studio Professor at the University of Tennessee and continues to participate as an invited studio critic and juror for the School of Architecture. John is a LEED accredited professional, a member of the American Institute of Architects, NCARB and locally a member of Knox Heritage and a ten-year member of City People.

Richard Foster, AIA - Director of Design, McCarty Holsaple McCarty -  Richard is the 2018 President of AIA East Tennessee and holds a Bachelor of Architecture, cum laude, from the University of Tennessee. He currently serves on the City of Knoxville Downtown Design Review Board, and is an AIA Blueprint for Better Champion. Prior to returning home to Tennessee in 2013, Richard served as a Project Architect at Gensler in Washington, DC.

Whitney Manahan - Architectural Intern, Dewhirst Properties – Whitney is an Adjunct Professor at the UT College of Architecture and Design. As an emerging professional, she is currently pursuing "a different path" in architecture working for a local developer committed to having a positive impact on the rehabilitation of downtown Knoxville.
